GGPoker Bans Third-Party Poker Tools as a Security Measure

How Did the Attacker See Opponents' Cards?

The recent scam didn't involve directly breaching the poker platform, but a sophisticated cyberattack on auxiliary software. Developers of the popular multi-tabling app Jurojin Poker confirmed that the attacker accessed their servers and secretly installed the Mesh Agent (a remote screen management tool) during updates.

The attacker viewed screens of select professionals in real-time, fleecing victims of vast sums by having knowledge of hidden cards.

GGPoker's Radical Reaction

Following criticism over its initial slower response and compromised environment, GGPoker released a package of five new security measures, changing the game for all users.

1. Complete Ban on Third-Party Software and Automation

The boldest and most discussed move is the uncompromising ban on all external applications running concurrently with the GGPoker client. The platform argues that any third-party software accessing data poses a potential security risk and source of information leaks. The list of banned software includes:

  • Tracking Tools and HUDs: PokerTracker 4, Hold’em Manager 3, Hand2Note, DriveHUD 2.

  • Helper and Table Software: Jurojin, IntuitiveTables, StarsCaption, Lobbyze.

  • Calculators and Scripts: Equilab, AutoHotkey, and other automation tools.

2. New Section: Game Security

The platform is adding a dedicated section for security settings, which players can optionally activate:

  • Screen Guard: Blocks any screen capture, recording, sharing, or remote access, preventing any spyware or unauthorized programs from seeing hole cards at the table. Streamers can grant exceptions to specific windows.

  • Connection Monitor: Automatically alerts users to suspicious connections, remote tools, or proxy servers.

  • Process Check & DNS Check: Allow verification of applications and network monitoring to prevent DNS hijacking risks.

3. Win-Rate Anomaly Detection (WAD)

GGPoker introduces a new internal algorithmic system, WAD. Instead of simply tracking behavior patterns, it analyzes players’ decisions against the actual cards their opponents held.

The system evaluates whether a player makes correct decisions suspiciously often and with accuracy unattainable for an honest person without knowledge of hidden cards. The platform confirmed that WAD successfully tested on previous fraud cases.

4. Discontinuation of Support for Old Operating Systems

Due to outdated operating systems lacking security patches and being easy targets for cyberattacks, GGPoker will definitively end support for older systems, including Windows 7 and 8 or macOS 11 (Big Sur), starting in 2027. Players will need to upgrade to at least Windows 10 or macOS 12 (Monterey).

5. Victim Support and Cooperation with Authorities

The platform announced it traced financial flows linked to the fraudulent account and identified a cryptocurrency wallet.

It handed over evidence to the Coinbase exchange requesting an account freeze and shared information with international law enforcement agencies.

Penalty for Honest Players?

While the implementation of advanced encryption elements and Screen Guard pleased the community, the blanket ban on third-party software sparked heated debate. Many players used tools like PokerTracker 4 or AutoHotkey solely for self-assessment, bankroll management, or simplifying tasks with keyboard shortcuts.

Jurojin Poker developers also criticized GGPoker's sweeping ban, calling it disproportionate: “There's a difference between addressing security threats and treating the third-party software ecosystem as the threat itself. Independent developers have spent years creating tools that enhance the online poker experience. Destroying this environment through blanket strict bans isn't a security strategy the industry should adopt. The answer should be collaboration, clear security standards, and open dialogue.”

GGPoker's decision as a global market leader sets a new trend in online poker. For most players, it means returning to exclusively using built-in features, like the integrated Smart HUD and analytical tool PokerCraft, available directly in the GGPoker client.

Even though the sweeping ban on HUDs is unwelcome news for many players, the exposed card scandal revealed that player fund security and game integrity must remain paramount.
