New Voting System: Power in the Hands of Living Legends

The new system, unveiled on the official show The Countdown, fundamentally changes the way new members are decided. The entire process unfolds in several stages:

  1. Public Nominations: Fans can nominate their favorites who meet the criteria for Hall of Fame entry. The nomination period for 2026 is open from June 11 to June 20.

  2. Shortlist: The HoF Governing Board will compile a final list of eight names based on public voting.

  3. Member Voting: The decisive voice lies with the 33 living Hall of Fame members. Each of them is given four votes to distribute among the candidates (max one vote per player).

Any nominee receiving at least 22 votes (a two-thirds majority) will automatically be inducted into the Hall of Fame. If no one reaches this threshold, the candidate with the highest overall vote count will be inducted. It is mathematically possible for up to six new members to be introduced in a given year.

This change comes after a system since 2020 limited new inductees to just one person per year, creating an overwhelming backlog of legends who have waited years for recognition.

Besides increasing the number of inductees, WSOP is also striving for full transparency. The voting results will be public, so the community will see how close their favorites came to success.

Who are the Hot Candidates for 2026?

The new rules have turned the spotlight on players who were previously overlooked, such as Mike Matusow, Ted Forrest, and Matt Savage. Moreover, this year's list of contenders grows with strong names now reaching the required age of 40:

  • Shaun Deeb

  • Jason Koon

  • Isaac Haxton

  • Justin Bonomo

We will find out who joins the ranks of names like Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, and Daniel Negreanu during the final table of the WSOP Main Event (between August 3 and 5, 2026), when the official announcement of new members will be broadcast live on ESPN.

Criteria for Hall of Fame Entry:

  • Playing against acknowledged top competition.

  • Minimum age of 40.

  • Experience with high-stakes games.

  • Consistently excellent results and peer respect.

  • Contributions to the growth and success of poker (for non-players).
