Texas Poker Open 2026: Vladyslav Shovkovyi Triumphs in Main Event After Spectacular Comeback

Shovkovyi's Rise from the Depths to Victory

The Main Event with a $2,200 buy-in attracted a total of 444 entries, slightly below the organizers' expectations, failing to surpass the guaranteed $1,000,000 prizepool.

The final table of six top players had a clear frontrunner due to the massive lead held by local player Phu "Bad Boy" Vo, who controlled 50% of the chips at the start of the day. At the opposite end was Ukrainian native and Houston resident Vladyslav Shovkovyi, starting with one of the smallest stacks.

Shovkovyi showed a masterclass in patience. He gradually gathered small pots without a showdown, steadily building his stack. Phu Vo initially held his lead, stylishly eliminating Randall Brooks in a quads vs full house clash. However, Shovkovyi doubled his chips through Vo and took the lead.

In the final heads-up, the players agreed on a deal, securing $160,000 each, while playing on for the remaining $20,000 and the prestigious belt. The winner was decided on the river with the board showing J d 6 s 2 h 9 s 8 h. Shovkovyi completed two pairs with J s 8 s, defeating Vo's K s J c.

Mugar entered the heads-up against Aaron Messmer with a 3:1 lead, and despite Messmer's tenacious effort, Mugar's pressure was overwhelming. In the final hand, Mugar's A-Q bested his opponent's A-8, completing a straight on the board.
