WPT Cambodia: Poker Nomad Ari Engel Turns Short Stack into Championship Victory

For the well-traveled Ari Engel, the luxurious NagaWorld resort in Phnom Penh was uncharted territory. Despite having played poker around the globe, Cambodia was a new experience, and he hit the jackpot on his first try.

The main event of the festival, carrying a $1,300 buy-in, attracted a total of 391 entries, keeping the prizepool at a guaranteed $500,000. Cash prizes were set aside for the top 49 players.

Engel came into Day 2 with a critical 18 big blinds, positioning him among the short stacks in the field of 61 remaining players. With patience and precision, he climbed the ranks until he reached the final table.

At the start of the final table, Ireland's Micheal O'Neill held the massive chiplead, putting immense pressure on his opponents. However, it was Engel who eliminated O'Neill in 3rd place and entered the heads-up against India's Aditya Agarwal with a commanding 9:1 lead. Agarwal didn't back down, managing to narrow the gap, leading the players to pause the game and agree on an ICM deal.

With the money divvied up but the prestigious trophy still at stake, the players agreed on an unconventional conclusion. They flipped blindly for the winning cup. Luck was on Engel's side, crowning him the official WPT Cambodia champion.
