WSOP 2026: Zachary Gruneberg Becomes the First Champion in 5-Card Omaha (Event #53)

Article cover

Event #53: $1,500 Five Card PLO was a fresh addition to this year’s schedule. With 1,319 entries vying for historical significance, the total prize pool soared to $1,750,973.

For Gruneberg, this win had a special flavor. Although he already had two online Hold'em bracelets, triumphing in a live event in front of friends was a completely different experience.

This was also his first six-figure win in a game other than No-Limit Hold'em. Throughout the final day, a lively crowd of supporters propelled him forward, even overshadowing the notoriously boisterous Brazilians.

In the concluding heads-up match, Gruneberg faced Hong Kong’s Hokyiu Lee. It was a particularly bitter end to the week for Lee, who had finished second in a $1,500 PLO event just days prior. The deciding moment came when Gruneberg hit a straight on the board with K s 4 c 4 d 3 c 2 s, sealing his opponent’s fate against Lee's Q h 9 d 7 d 6 c 3 s on a board of 8 d 5 c A s 3 d A c.
