The prestigious €5,300 EPT Main Event kicks off Day 5 today at noon local time. The field has been whittled down to the final 28 players, each guaranteed at least €30,350 at this stage.
Leading the pack is Spanish online qualifier Jose Criado, the only player who has surpassed the five million chip mark. Hot on his heels are his compatriot Gerard Carbo (4,815,000) and Dutch pro Joris Ruijs (4,625,000).
The highlight of the day, however, is the potential rewriting of history. Two legendary former Barcelona champions are still vying for the title, aiming to join the elite group of players who have won two EPT Main Event titles, with the chance to make history by doing so at the same event.
John Juanda, a Poker Hall of Famer and the 2015 champion, holds a stack of 1,855,000, while Poland’s 2016 winner Sebastian Malec, who captivated the poker world with his fairy-tale story of turning an online satellite ticket into a million-euro victory, enters with a stack of 1,485,000 chips.
