Jonathan Rees Achieves Lifelong Triumph at the PartyPoker Tour Castellón Main Event

The third Spanish stop of this year’s PartyPoker Tour series landed at the Orenes Gran Casino de Castellón, drawing 368 entries for the €500 Main Event. The prizepool soared to €163,760, with financial rewards shared among the top 55 players.

Eighteen players returned for the final third day, with local player Pau Veciana holding a significant lead. Just two hours into play, the nine-player final table was set. Among the contenders alongside Rees and Veciana were familiar faces like Ian Simpson and PartyPoker Tour team members Barry Carter and Matt Staples, who just days ago reached the final table in the Mini Main Event as well.

Action at the final table started at a breakneck pace. Ian Simpson was the first to depart in 9th place after an unsuccessful bluff against Rees’s straight. Soon after, Jose Maria Perez eliminated Dorian Dizy and Matt Staples simultaneously in a brutal triple all-in when his A c K h hit a flush on the board 9 s Q h 3 h 6 h 7 h.

Rees steadily accumulated chips and took the lead during four-handed play. Veciana managed to double up through Rees and entered the final heads-up with a 2:1 advantage.

Decisive Hand of the Tournament

Right in the first hand of heads-up, the game turned on its head. Rees held Q s Q c, and after the turn K s 9 s 7 d 5 s, he went all-in. Veciana instantly called with K h 9 c, but a river 4 s gave Rees a flush, flipping the balance and securing him a massive lead.

The final decision came shortly after when Rees called with Q h T h against Veciana’s all-in with K c 6 h. The board J h J c 8 s Q d 2 d confirmed a career-defining victory for Rees.
