The $2,200 Global Poker Championship, part of the Mediterranean Poker Party series, attracted a total of 830 entries, competing for a guaranteed prizepool of $2,000,000. Sixteen players entered the final day, with Congya Zhang starting with just the 12th largest stack.
While Romanian Adrian State set the pace early, knocking out several opponents to lead the pack, Zhang patiently awaited her moments to climb up the ranks.
The turning point came with the final six players when Zhang doubled her stack multiple times. State misjudged a situation, going all-in with A s 5 s, which Zhang swiftly called with A d K s, sending him to 5th place.
The dominance of Chinese players in the TOP 4 was highlighted by Zhang ousting her compatriot Mengdian Peng in 4th place. She then hit a set on the flop with T h T c against another Chinese player, Yilu Yuan, who had A s K h, leaving him in 3rd place.
In the heads-up against Russia's Sergei Petrushevskii, Zhang entered with a commanding 4:1 lead. The final duel lasted less than 20 minutes. In the decisive hand, Petrushevskii went all-in with 5 c 5 d, and Zhang called with J s J h. The board 3 h 3 d 7 s T h 9 c secured her deserved title and the six-figure prize, doubling her previous peak.
