The Victorian Champs Main Event attracted a total of 715 entries. With a buy-in of AUD 2,500, the prize pool soared to 1,573,000 AUD (~$1,106,000), with the top 89 players taking home cash rewards.
Hun Wei Lee entered the nine-player final table as the chipleader. Although the start wasn’t exactly as he had hoped, temporarily losing his lead, his patient gameplay gradually brought him back to the forefront of the tournament.
The final heads-up clash with Australian poker legend Joe Hachem extended over two gripping hours, during which the lead switched sides multiple times.
In the critical hand of the tournament, Lee went all-in with J c J d while Hachem attempted to double up with A c 5 d. The flop 7 h A h 3 c gave Hachem the lead, which he maintained after the turn Q d, but the river J h secured Lee the victory.
This marks Lee's second major title at Crown Melbourne in the past six months, having won the $25K Challenge during the Aussie Millions festival in May. However, this victory held special significance for him.
“Joe is the reason I started playing poker. He’s the godfather of Australian poker, and playing heads-up against him was a huge honor. Beating him is the cherry on top and truly a dream come true,” declared the thrilled champion after the tournament.
